Congress Continues Debate Over Whether Or Not Nation Should Be Economically Ruined

(hey - there's supposed to be the Onion logo in the picture here...?)

It's surreal when a satire piece from the Onion seems more real than satire.  I bet more than a few people couldn't tell if this is true or humor.

WASHINGTON—Members of the U.S. Congress reported Wednesday they were continuing to carefully debate the issue of whether or not they should allow the country to descend into a roiling economic meltdown of historically dire proportions. "It is a question that, I think, is worthy of serious consideration: Should we take steps to avoid a crippling, decades-long depression that would lead to disastrous consequences on a worldwide scale? Or should we not do that?" asked House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), adding that arguments could be made for both sides, and that the debate over ensuring America’s financial solvency versus allowing the nation to default on its debt—which would torpedo stock markets, cause mortgage and interests rates to skyrocket, and decimate the value of the U.S. dollar—is “certainly a conversation worth having.” "Obviously, we don't want to rush to consensus on whether it is or isn't a good idea to save the American economy and all our respective livelihoods from certain peril until we've examined this thorny dilemma from every angle. And if we’re still discussing this matter on Aug. 2, well, then, so be it.” At press time, President Obama said he personally believed the country should not be economically ruined.

Doctor Who's Christopher Eccleston

I still lament what could have been...in a world where everyone gets what they want, of course.
(lament: verb, to feel or express sorrow or regret for)

From Bad Wilf:

At an acting master class, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Christopher Eccleston was asked why he left, such a high paid job like Doctor Who. He responded:
“I left Doctor Who, because I could not get along with the senior people. I left, because of politics. I did not see eye-to-eye, with them. I didn’t agree with the way things were being run. I didn’t like the culture that had grown up, around the series. So, I left. I felt, over a principle. I thought to remain, which would have made me a lot of money and given me huge visibility, the price I would have had to pay, was to eat a lot of shit. I’m not being funny about that. I didn’t want to do that and, it comes to the art of it, in a way. I feel that if you run your career and-we are vulnerable as actors and, we are constantly humiliating ourselves auditioning. But, if you allow that to go on, on a grand scale. You will loose, whatever it is about you and, it will be present in your work. If you allow your desire to be successful and visible and financially secure. If you allow that, to make you throw shades on your parents, on your upbringing, then you’re knackered. You’ve got to keep something back, for yourself. Because, it’ll be present in your work. A purity or an idealism is essential, or, you’ll become-you’ve got to have standards, no matter how hard work that is. So, it makes it hard road, really. You know. It’s easy to find a job, when you’ve got no morals, you’ve got nothing to be compromised you can go ‘yeah, yeah. That doesn’t matter. That director can bully that prop man and, I won’t say anything about it’. But, then when that director comes to you and says ‘I think you should play it like this’. You’ve surely got to go ‘How can I respect you, when you behave like that?’
So, that’s why I left. My face didn’t fit and, I’m sure they were glad to see the back of me. The important thing is that I succeeded. It was a great part. I loved playing him. I loved connecting with that audience. Because I’ve always acted for adults and the suddenly, your acting for children. Who are far more tasteful, they will not be bullshitted. It’s either good, or it’s bad. They don’t schmooze at after show parties, with cocktails

The Murdoch Scandal

I'm confused by all the surprise surrounding Ruper Murdoch and son because anyone who owns FOXNews and allows their level of misinformation, misdirection, and fanaticism - a person/company who actually encourages deception and spinning the truth and smirks when challenged about it - that kind of person/company would do anything.

It's sad, but not surprising.

When truth doesn't matter, I don't know how we can effectively function as a society.
At the very least, let's be honest.

I wish I knew someone on the other side that agrees with this...

Eric Cantor with Barack Obama

I agree generally with this NYT op-ed piece, but especially emphasize and affirm my agreement to the ideas in bold below...
Paul Krugman from the NY Times on July 14, 2011 (via Hunter on Daily Kos)

Getting to Crazy by Paul Krugman

There aren’t many positive aspects to the looming possibility of a U.S. debt default. But there has been, I have to admit, an element of comic relief — of the black-humor variety — in the spectacle of so many people who have been in denial suddenly waking up and smelling the crazy.
A number of commentators seem shocked at how unreasonable Republicans are being. “Has the G.O.P. gone insane?” they ask.

Why, yes, it has. But this isn’t something that just happened, it’s the culmination of a process that has been going on for decades. Anyone surprised by the extremism and irresponsibility now on display either hasn’t been paying attention, or has been deliberately turning a blind eye.

And may I say to those suddenly agonizing over the mental health of one of our two major parties: People like you bear some responsibility for that party’s current state.

Let’s talk for a minute about what Republican leaders are rejecting.

President Obama has made it clear that he’s willing to sign on to a deficit-reduction deal that consists overwhelmingly of spending cuts, and includes draconian cuts in key social programs, up to and including a rise in the age of Medicare eligibility. These are extraordinary concessions. As The Times’s Nate Silver points out, the president has offered deals that are far to the right of what the average American voter prefers — in fact, if anything, they’re a bit to the right of what the average Republican voter prefers!

Yet Republicans are saying no. Indeed, they’re threatening to force a U.S. default, and create an economic crisis, unless they get a completely one-sided deal.
And this was entirely predictable.

First of all, the modern G.O.P. fundamentally does not accept the legitimacy of a Democratic presidency — any Democratic presidency. We saw that under Bill Clinton, and we saw it again as soon as Mr. Obama took office.

As a result, Republicans are automatically against anything the president wants, even if they have supported similar proposals in the past. Mitt Romney’s health care plan became a tyrannical assault on American freedom when put in place by that man in the White House. And the same logic applies to the proposed debt deals.

Put it this way: If a Republican president had managed to extract the kind of concessions on Medicare and Social Security that Mr. Obama is offering, it would have been considered a conservative triumph. But when those concessions come attached to minor increases in revenue, and more important, when they come from a Democratic president, the proposals become unacceptable plans to tax the life out of the U.S. economy.

Beyond that, voodoo economics has taken over the G.O.P.

Supply-side voodoo — which claims that tax cuts pay for themselves and/or that any rise in taxes would lead to economic collapse — has been a powerful force within the G.O.P. ever since Ronald Reagan embraced the concept of the Laffer curve. But the voodoo used to be contained. Reagan himself enacted significant tax increases, offsetting to a considerable extent his initial cuts.

And even the administration of former President George W. Bush refrained from making extravagant claims about tax-cut magic, at least in part for fear that making such claims would raise questions about the administration’s seriousness.

Recently, however, all restraint has vanished — indeed, it has been driven out of the party.

Last year Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader, asserted that the Bush tax cuts actually increased revenue — a claim completely at odds with the evidence — and also declared that this was “the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”

And it’s true: even Mr. Romney, widely regarded as the most sensible of the contenders for the 2012 presidential nomination, has endorsed the view that tax cuts can actually reduce the deficit.

Which brings me to the culpability of those who are only now facing up to the G.O.P.’s craziness.

Here’s the point: those within the G.O.P. who had misgivings about the embrace of tax-cut fanaticism might have made a stronger stand if there had been any indication that such fanaticism came with a price, if outsiders had been willing to condemn those who took irresponsible positions.

But there has been no such price.

Mr. Bush squandered the surplus of the late Clinton years, yet prominent pundits pretend that the two parties share equal blame for our debt problems.
Paul Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, proposed a supposed deficit-reduction plan that included huge tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, then received an award for fiscal responsibility.
So there has been no pressure on the G.O.P. to show any kind of responsibility, or even rationality — and sure enough, it has gone off the deep end.
If you’re surprised, that means that you were part of the problem.

Hunter at Daily Kos adds:

Bad: I'm not sure there's any way to express just how silly these people are. Worse: even now, most of our press is bound and determined not to point that out.

E-mail to Dave Reichert on 07/14/2011

On Thursday I wrote the following e-mail to Dave Reichert (my Republican representative; he does take a good picture, I'll give him that):

The right wing of the Republican party is holding the rest of the country hostage.
The President has bent over backwards to find common areas of agreement for spending cuts.  All he's asking is that we not put all the pressure on the middle and lower classes.  Can't the rich afford to put in their fair share?  Do the oil companies and Wall Street banks have to make THAT much profit.
It's ridiculous that your party would rather cut money for social welfare programs than ask the rich to stop using loopholes to avoid paying a fair share of the tax burden.
Your party is continuing to play games rather than govern.
Since 2001 the Congress has voted to increase the debt limit 5 times.  Why, suddenly, is this a problem for you?  I can only imagine it's because you would rather ruin our country's economic standing (such as it is) than give this president any help in avoiding a catastrophe.
The Republican party said yes, yes, yes, all the way to near disaster, gave the reins to Democrats and began your choir of No, No, No.
This voter would like to see you actually propose WORKING WITH THE PRESIDENT TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.  Stop playing games.
Not just on this debt limit issue, but getting us out of this economic hole.
Your party leadership is making you look bad.

Down with the Right Wingers who I have no respect for...(for whom I have no respect.)

Tea Party Debt Ceiling
I don't know what to do with my anger, frustration, outrage, disappointment and disrespect toward a fellow American who would smile, applaud, and advocate for my government to shutdown.
(Note:  This picture was on Huffington Post and I don't know where it came from or if it's a file photo or whatever, but it aptly describes the current situation so I'm using it)

As of today, the negotiations to raise the debt ceiling have yielded no results.
The 'tea party' wing of the Republican party has taken over and they're acting like bullies.

Eric Cantor, Grover Norquist, John Boehner, and the rest of the bully brigade (including my congressman Dave Reichert, I bet) have said they'll only vote to raise the debt ceiling if there is an equal amount of spending cuts to offset the increase.  (Note:  Grover Norquist is not in Congress; he's a tax activist who gets elected officials to sign a no tax pledge)

Obama has agreed to up to 3 trillion in spending cuts, but he recognizes that most of the cuts the right-wing proposes will adversely affect lower and middle class Americans.

Obama would like to see the wealthy and upper classes do their part as well.  Obama (and I) would like to eliminate tax loopholes that the wealthy receive (apparently wealthy people get some kind of tax break for using corporate jets?).  And not just the wealthy - the corporate wealth should be taxed more fairly.  Is it fair that the oil companies are making billions of dollars in profit, but don't pay very much tax?

The right wing says closing loopholes in the tax code is essentially increasing tax.
And, they 'draw the line in the sand' at increasing taxes.

They say, in the middle of an economic crisis that involves so much unemployment you don't increase taxes on the wealthy because they're the job creators of the economy.

1.  If the wealthy were job creators, then we'd have jobs.  They have wealth.  Where are the jobs?
2.  Cutting spending generally affects poor people who don't know where their next meal is going to come from.  Any of the wealthy who have to pay a little more will probably still not worry about whether they'll have access to the basic necessities of life.
3.  The Republicans and Tea Party people have been unusually cruel and fearful under President Obama and it makes me wonder what they hate more...that he's a Democrat, or that he's half black.
4.  Where was all the right wing's fiscal responsibility talk during the George Bush years when he was spending left and right and starting wars?  I think it's hypocritical to be outraged at this point.

There is plenty of analysis on the Internet, in newspapers, and on television.  And there are many people who are more articulate and studied than I.  I'll leave it to them.

I just want the historical record to show which side I'm on.
I'm on the side of Obama.  He is a wonderful president during these times.  He's holding up well.  I wish he could be more progressive, but because of the right wingers he's been forced to compromise a lot.

In compromising, though, many of his programs and plans to solve the current economic woes have not been given the oomph they should have had.  Not quite enough money and you can get near the top of the hill, but not to the peak, which means you roll back down again.

The Republicans have fought him at every turn.  Their main goal is to see Obama out of office.  The health of the United States of America makes no difference to them.  They're the type of people who would cut off their noses to spite their face.
This process has been disturbing on so many levels there will probably be a thousand books written about it.

Where is the outcry from reasonable people?
Is there a commonality we all truly believe in that we can gather round?
Speaking for me...I don't know what to do.  It's overwhelming.
It seems everywhere I turn there's a wrong that should be righted.
I want to go to the core of the problem and start working there.
But, where is that?
Sigh.

(Sometimes I think the core is clear air and clean water because we need both of those to survive as humans.  However, even if we have clean air and clean water, if our hearts aren't filled with hope, or spirit, or love, then that's a problem too.)

Congratulations

New York state legislature passes law to allow marriage in New York between gays and lesbians.
Good.
My state has State Registered Domestic Partnership.  Here, the SRDP is the equivalent of marriage under state law. However, there is still a restriction that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.
I think of marriage as a spiritual choice; a religious matter.  I don't think marriage should be defined by the state at all - separation of church and state.  Cultural traditions are still dominant here, though.
As long as we continue to make marriage both a religious and civil state of being, I think everyone should have the right to be a couple.
Eventually, this will be the way.

It just doesn't make sense...

From The Nation:  LeBron James and the Quote Heard Round The World

LeBron James tells his truth...
“All the people that were rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day, they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today. They have the same personal problems they had today. I’m going to continue to live the way I want to live and continue to do the things that I want to do with me and my family and be happy with that. They can get a few days or a few months or whatever the case may be on being happy about not only myself, but the Miami Heat not accomplishing their goal. But they have to get back to the real world at some point.”

Then, some media cry out; Jalen Rose on ESPN...
“He needs to learn to speak to the media. He puts his foot in his mouth time and time again.”

What do you want?  Someone who speaks their truth?  Or, predictable, doublespeak that's been vetted by PR representatives?
I'd rather know the truth of someone through their words than bully them into blandness.

(Next, I wonder why the media works against themselves so often...and I come to the following...)

The best interest of the media used to be shining a light on Truth.
Now it's inciting a reaction - positive or negative, they don't care.
Money is drawn to emotional reactions, not truth.
The only thing that's of interest to a corporation is Money.
Money has become more important than Truth in today's media/marketing/Wall Street world.

(Now, I'm thinking about corporations...)

A corporation doesn't support an idea or a government or a way of life.  A corporation will do business with anyone.  People run the corporation, but they run it as if it's separate from them; as if it doesn't reflect who they are.  They hide behind a concept of what a corporation is supposed to do or be.

Mom and Pop stores (and certainly there must be SOME corporations) put something else above the job of making money because it really DOES reflect who they are.  Their values are part of their money-making strategy.

What if people became more like corporations?
Maybe they already are - media stars, sports stars, etc.

I don't think that's a good thing.

Maybe money really is the root of all evil.

(After writing this post I'm not sure what the main point would be...I just got led around by the ideas and couldn't sit with any of them long enough to write something more developed.  But honestly, I like the ideas.)

(And FYI - I don't really follow basketball.  Last I heard, LeBron James was a phenom high school athlete who transferred straight to the NBA.  Everyone had great hopes and I thought people liked him a lot.  He seemed nice enough when I saw him early on.  Now Cleveland's mad at him and people are saying bad things about him.  I don't get it.  Anyway - this post isn't really about LeBron James - the article about LeBron was the catalyst to begin thinking about broader issues.)

Doctor Who

From Christopher Eccleston to Martha Jones to the friendship of the Doctor and Donna to the romance of Rose and now to this...I so enjoy Doctor Who.  It gets better and better and better.

Last night, to top off my birthday, LJB and I watched "A Good Man  Goes to War", the season six first half cliffhanger.  What a joy.  Confusing, but fun.  There are lots of strings to untie, and upon further reflection, there may be a plothole or two.  For now, I'm basking in the glow of all the good relationships and wonderful chemistry between the characters and the actors created by Stephen Moffat.

I think rewatching the Season Five and Season Six episodes will be as much fun (for different reasons) as watching them the first time!

Happy Birthday to me...

For this commemoration of another year of my life I will simply ask the question...

How can I serve the energy of love this year?

Here are some horoscopes for me...

Supermodel Adriana Lima (1981) shares your birthday today. The key to your survival and happiness is your positive state of mind and your optimism. Your belief in your future is empowering. This is not to say you're not realistic - because you are. You like to be physically active; and you are stoic in difficult situations. Work hard to build or construct something this year because your rewards will soon follow.

If today is your birthday: It might be long overdue, but because of your established abilities and talents you could find yourself in a leadership role among your peers during coming months. Others will be looking to you for fresh ideas and activities.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (June 12). You are more charming than you know. Someone will fall for you, becoming smitten with your lovely manners and the level of attention you so effortlessly give those around you. A nugget of knowledge will lead you to make extra money in July. September brings the completion of a goal. You share a special connection with Cancer and Scorpio people. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 15, 3, 34 and 22.

If it’s your birthday todays
You will face a hectic schedule on the professional front. Achieving set targets can open the doors to faster career growth. Be careful with your finances; do not believe everything you are told or that comes to your attention, go through and double check all the information before acting on it. Spending time with your partner will make you happy and you can benefit from their insights.

IF JUNE 12 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Beaming confidence and polished business sense will make you a likely candidate for enormous success in the year to come. Right now, you can plan successfully for the future and accept opportunities or offers that come your way. But your romantic fantasies or an attractive someone who has recently arrived on the scene might distract you from what is most important. Be sure to keep your promises and don't ignore any strings that are attached to a business deal between August and January. A new romance that appears on the scene in the early fall might seem like gold. Be sure to test the surface to make sure it isn't merely a veneer. In February, your business savvy and street smarts will help you appear proficient in any area and you can impress people in high places with admirable credentials.

June 12, 2011…a #4 World-Wide Day. Today “a penny saved is a penny earned.” Public Servants try to be realistic and practical. Useful products are patented. In your lifestyle: Do the things that must be done to maintain what you have. Correct mistakes. Socialize and shop within your budget. Nothing comes easy…there’s work to be done.
Generally compatible Birthday numbers for #12 are: #1, #2, #5, #6, #8, #10, #11, #14, #15, #17, #19, #20, #23, #26, #28, #29. With all other numbers: The #12 will need to concentrate on one goal, be disciplined for practicality and talk less and do more to maintain a harmonious, materially successful combination.
If #12 is your birthday, find your passion, stick with it and there’s no stopping you. You’re artistic, sociable and have a fine mind. Avoid sugar and alcoholic beverages to curb your frequent highs and lows. Finish what you begin and “don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” You are multi-talented, have a vivid, creative imagination and are wise in surprising ways. Learn to accept the world as it really is and people for what they really are. You find peace, happiness and security through acceptance.
In 2011, curb your flights of fancy and get down to brass tacks. Work, build and plan for tomorrow today. Schedule time, money and effort. Correct mistaken ideas and over-expenditures and put yourself, your body and your life in working order. No vacations now…you’ll have more freedom next year.
In 2011 wear the color green to attract sensible, enduring, stable, honest relationships.
Emerald is your gem in 2011.
People whose names begin with the letters D, M and V 2011.
Thursday is your lucky day of the week in 2011.
Your 2011 lottery numbers are: 2, 3, 7, 15, 21, 29.

Google Doodle Today

The Les Paul Guitar Doodle is back - by popular demand.
I noticed the guitar icon yesterday, but somehow managed to miss strumming the strings until this morning.
Cool.
Here's my mad jumble of noise.
(Actually - it's a sentence I typed over and over for 30 seconds.)

The Doodles create a lot of Goodwill from me to Google.
They're a way for people all around the world to connect, they celebrate a sense of pride and accomplishment, they commemorate important historic times and people.
They're clever and well designed and fun to see.

The Google Doodle Archive is here.

UPDATE 6/12/2011: Sadly the following links don't seem to be available anymore. Oh well. I tried.
Do you recognize this song? (the end sounds like Yankee Doodle, but it's not)
What about this one?

But, here's a song that really sounds good (I didn't do it)

FURTHER UPDATE 6/13/2011: Les Paul Doodle and a pro in action...

For as long as I shall live...

...I will Testify to Love

I'm listening to music while I work and this song captured my heart this morning.

*****

Update: Wynonna Judd seems to be speaking to me this morning. Here's another song that's touched my heart.

YOU WERE LOVED

We all want to make ourplace in this world

We all want our voices to be heard

Everyone wants a chance to be someone

We all have dreams we need to dream

But sweeter than any star you can reach

Is when you reach and find

you've found someone

You'll hold this world's most priceless thing

The greatest gift this life can bring

If you can look back and know

You were loved.

CHORUS:

You were loved by someone

Touched by someone

Held by someone

Meant something to someone

Loved somebody

Touched somebody's heart along the way

You can look back and say

You were loved.

You can have diamonds in your hand.

Have all the riches in the land

Without love do you really have a thing

When someone cares that you're alive

When someone finds their world in your eyes

Then you'll know you've found all you need

You'll hold this world's most priceless prize

The sweetest treasure in this life

If you can look back and know

You were loved

CHORUS

You were loved by someone

Touched by someone

Held by someone

Meant something to someone

Loved somebody

Touched somebody's heart along the way

You can look back and say

You were loved.

So many roads that you can take

Whatever way you go

Don't take that road alone

Better you should know...

You were loved by someone

Touched by someone

Held by someone

Meant something to someone

Loved somebody

Touched somebody's heart along the way

You can look back and say

You did OK

You were loved.

So remember to tell that one

You are loved.

Jesus Christ Superstar

The movie version of "Jesus Christ, Superstar" is one of my all-time favorite movies.  For me, it describes a human Jesus, political realities, the beginning of revolution, how popularity and fame change a message, and mob mentality.  I think every song I'm listening to is the best song of the record, until I hear the next one and remember how much I enjoy that song too.
Today I had an opportunity to see Village Theater's production of "Jesus Christ, Superstar".  The set and costumes were contemporary.  Because of all the revolutions taking place in the Middle East lately, that's the image I associated with the sets and costumes.  Really great.
The voices of both Judas (Michael K Lee) and Jesus (Aaron C Finley) were marvelous.  What talent.  I especially enjoyed "Heaven on Their Minds" from Lee.
There was even some 'street' choreography that was interesting and fun.
I feel really lucky to have seen it.
Fantastic job everyone!

Oprah Winfrey

Rebecca Traister at the Los Angeles Times has been writing about the last shows from Oprah and I think she says it MUCH better than I. And as far as I remember, I agree with everything she's written.

These were my brief thoughts before the final episode:

Today, it ends. 25 years with Oprah Winfrey.
Thank you to Oprah for being an inspiration throughout the years.
From my vantage point, I've appreciated Oprah's honest journey through life. I'm fascinated by her drive and ambition. I'm interested by her acceptance of the wealth and power she's acquired through her television show. I'm happy for her relationships with Stedman and Gayle. I value the time she's given to her spiritual life, which helped my spiritual journey. It was through Oprah Winfrey that I became familiar with Eckhart Tolle's book A New Earth. I listened to Oprah and Eckhart discuss the book through ten weeks (in 2008?) and my world shifted.
I wasn't working when the Oprah show went national back in 1986 so I started with her. In this last year I've made it a point to watch all her shows. In between, I was an off and on viewer. Sometimes she spoke to me, and sometimes she didn't.
I gained a lot of respect for Oprah when she was contemplating how to proceed with the show during the time daytime talk was heading down a sleazy path - lurid stories about sad, misguided, and angry people. I remember Oprah talking about it at the beginning of a season and saying she only wanted to continue the show if she could use it to make the world a better place. She was taking a risk because she wasn't sure the viewers would follow her. She elevated herself; she chose light. I think that's when her influence and power started multiplying. I was proud of her.
Over the years I've been inspired by Oprah and many of her guests. I'm one of the people who laughed a lot when Oprah and Gayle went on their trips. That's what I'll miss.
I don't understand what it's like to be a person like Oprah, but I'm glad she's been a part of my life all these years.
Luckily, she's not going away. O Magazine and the OWN Network are still around for those much needed moments of inspiration.

Yesterday I watched part two of the celebration show and was moved to tears a couple times - her Morehouse men, and the young people (headed by Dakota Fanning).
Whatever Oprah has given me, I'm grateful she's helped thousands of people transform their lives.

January 28, 2001

My last day of smoking was January 28, 2001.  I would have guessed I haven't smoked for more than 15 years...but it's only been just over ten years.

My takeaway from the End of The World hub-bub

A small group of Christians, led by Harold Camping, proclaimed today as the beginning of the end of the world; the rapture.  They spent a good deal of money on billboards and other media so we'd have ample opportunity to get our Godly house in order.  A generous undertaking.  Thank you,
However, as expected, the end of the world does not seem to be upon us.

I'm curious to know how the faithful will feel at the end of this day, presuming they are still among us.
See this Slate online magazine article to find out.  In summary, it's not hard for the faithful to alter their understanding of reality to match their beliefs.

The last paragraph stood out for me:
For those not waiting for the world to end in a storm of fire and light it is easy to write off the believers as deluded, but...we adapt to even the most unlikely of contradictions using nothing more than our methods of everyday rationalization. The faithful could just as easily be those who stubbornly stand by disgraced politicians, failed ideologies, dishonest friends, or cheating spouses, even when reality highlights the clearest of inconsistencies. Armageddon is unlikely to arrive this weekend, but most of us have lived through it many times before.
In other words...
we've all been (or are) faithful to a person or idea even when we've been disappointed by reality.

Another Republican I will not vote for...

Santorum

I'm adding Santorum to the list of Republicans I will not vote for in 2012. I think it's creepy that Santorum wants people to be tortured so badly that he doesn't even pay attention to the experience of a man who was tortured. The way some of these people talk it's like they haven't even considered the moral implications of supporting torture as a policy; they're only thinking of the political gains.

To recap: Through casual observation and reading the Internet I've eliminated Santorum, Pawlenty, and Huckabee from the list of possible Republican nominees. Sheesh at this rate I'll have no one left to vote for BUT Barack Obama! (yay!)

This Is It

Image from Tea Masters Blog

I am living my meditation.  This is it.
You are living your medititation.  This is it.
I know I am breathing in.  I know I am breathing out.

I'm reminded this morning that I'm not alone in my desire to live my best life.  Eckhart Tolle wouldn't sell so many books and Oprah Winfrey wouldn't be so popular if other people weren't looking for the best way to live a life of connection, discovery, and joy.  It's a paradox that the journey is mostly solitary, but is fulfilled when we connect with others.  I have a hard time reconciling that duality.
