Australian Open

Wow - this rivalry is intense. Nadal benefits from Federer's earlier domination; its easier to strive to be at the top than to stay at the top. Federer was so dominant he hasn't needed a coach (I hope he gets one now). Commentators talked about Federer like he was a winning machine. He always had another gear to shift into if he was in trouble.
Until Nadal came along. To me, the mind shift from indomitable tennis champion to focused competitor is taking some time and adjustment for Federer.
Nadal is a pleasure to watch. He's always improving.
The trophy presentation was touching. I'm glad both players are kind, generous, gracious, and warm. Its easy to like both of them.
This is my favorite tennis rivalry ever. I hope Roger Federer figures out what he needs to do to maintain the rivalry. Love it, love it, love it. This is life - - Focus, drive, awareness. Fantastic!

Update: From Patrick McEnroe about Roger Federer: "The problem for him is that he's never had to really adjust to anything. He's always been so good and so talented, he could just rely on his game and kind of figure it out when he gets out there. All of a sudden, he's playing a guy he can't do that against. … He doesn't get on top of the guy when he's down, and he thought he was going to go away physically."

Looking forward to the 2009 Australian Open Men's Final

Who knows what will happen this time. ESPN2 at 12:30 am Saturday night (Sunday morning, really).

It's hard to watch the Australian Open because of the time difference. And, as it turns out, the networks I watch don't carry it. I forget its on.

Wimbledon

Wow - what a match. Crazy good tennis. I was rooting for Federer, but I'm not unhappy Nadal won. I am overwhelmed by their level of talent and determination. Amazing.
Excellent work by both.
Roger Federer wasn't playing his best tennis, I thought. He sent a lot of balls into the net. He had more unforced errors and winners than Nadal. I wonder what was off balance for him that he hit into the net a lot? Or am I imagining that he did?
He's a class act. I love the tennis clothes he wears.
The match made me think about what it means to be an elite athlete. I can't imagine it. I'm not a good competitor. I don't like to be in the lead, I don't like people gunning after me, I like to sneak in at the end. That's the only way I can win things. And if people expect me to win, I get so nervous I can't keep calm...and I'm talking board games here! I can't imagine (can not e-ven i-mag-ine) what it would be like on Center Court at Wimbledon.
And what must it be like to be the close friend, family member or significant other of an elite athlete? What do they need when they win? Lose?
So - good for Roger Federer and good for Rafael Nadal.
Great match.

Venus or Serena?

Venus or Serena? The question is better than the answer. So says Mary Carillo to Barry Horn of the Dallas Morning News.
True enough. I don't want the match to end. I want them to continue playing while I ponder the bigger questions of focus, determination, family, ambition, love, talent, jealousy, sisters, Dads, Moms, graciousness, and friendship. I can't imagine what its like to live those questions.

Good on ya Venus.
Cheers Serena.
