Okay - I actually watched a John McCain/Sarah Palin rally. It was in Cedar Rapids and shown on CNN.
1. She reads her notes a lot. That's fine except it contradicts her sometime claims that she ad libbed some of her acceptance speech when the teleprompter failed.
2. I'm a bit tired of hearing the same old lines from her. This particular speech was fairly short and there weren't as many 'stock' lines, but still. And John McCain told his fair share of them (I can't wait to introduce her to Washington). One of her lines was "In politics there are candidates who like to use change to promote their careers and there are politicians who use their careers to promote change." Guess which side John McCain is on.
3. Palin bungled some of her lines as written on her notes...particularly about how they're going to 'shake things up' in Washington.
3. Wowza - John McCain bombed. I mean, even if I supported him, I'd think he bombed. He was reading from a speech, but still fumbled around, looked uncomfortable, and didn't know how to read it. He paused for applause lines and no one applauded. The crowd was much quieter and less enthusiastic than they were during Sarah Palin's speech. Okay - maybe that's not such a bad thing because he's trying to be President. But, its uncomfortable to watch.
4. The best applause lines for McCain came when he was denigrating Obama or Biden. That says a lot about the world view/perspective of people who support John McCain.
5. Somebody protesting John McCain. The crowd had to chant and then McCain had to tell them "the one thing Americans want us to do is stop yelling at each other" (I've heard that before) Then he goes off on why Obama won't come and stand with him and have town hall meetings. Why won't he stand with McCain and face the American people's hopes and dreams? He likes that 'cause he's kinda laughing about it and looking incredulous. He's off his speech now so he comes across more relaxed.
6. It turns out there were protesters during Sarah Palin's speech as well, but I didn't catch that. Maybe that's why I thought there was more chanting during her speech.
7. Regarding tax cutting, this is what Sarah Palin said..."That's what we're going to do in a Palin and McCain administration". She said taxes kill jobs, hurt small business, and make things worse. Barack Obama has poor judgement...he wants to raise income taxes, payroll and investment income taxes, death taxes, and business taxes. He wants to raise taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars which will make today look like the good old days.
8. According to Sarah Palin, only one man ever warned us two years ago about the coming dangers of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
9. Palin and McCain have discussed how VP Palin will work in the government...1) she's going to lead the mission of energy security, including drill now. 2) She'll help lead the mission of reforming goverment (government checkbook online, like she did in Alaska, and 3) she would look out for special needs children.
10. This is paraphrased what she said about Barack Obama: Our opponent likes to blame a lot, but has he ever lifted a finger to help, has he ever reached out a reformers hand to the other side of the aisle, has he ever told his party no, when it comes to reform has he ever said 'we did' instead of 'I will'?
McCain Palin has a track record of change and reform.
11. Our opponents like to say they fight for you. I'll say what John McCain won't...
"There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you". She introduces McCain.
12. McCain talks about the same old stuff. He says Barack Obama has taken more money from Freddie Mac than any other Senator except the chairman of the committee that oversees it. He says the CEO of Freddie Mac was on the VP search committee for Obama. This is one of the lines he bumbled.
SUMMARY: McCain/Palin don't do well at speeches. They believe in lowering taxes. John McCain is the only one who can save us.
