Selfishness

"The 'selfish man' is he who would do the thing, even if it harmed others, so long as it gave him pleasure; the 'unselfish man' is he who would do still do the thing, even if it gave him no pleasure, so long as it pleased others" Lewis Carroll

A 'civilized' society requires compromise which requires an 'unselfish man'. A happy and wise person understands how to walk the line between unselfish and martyr.
I wonder if the full context of this quote from Lewis Carroll would talk about that?
