McCain/Palin is in Green Bay Wisconsin - carried by CNN Live
He's describing some very specific policies he wants to put into place. I've missed a few of them while writing this, so I'm going to look at it on transcripts later. This post is for my impressions.
1. Sarah Palin is getting a little disillusioned because she's discovered that McCain wants her around so she can be the 'little woman' and introduce him all the time. That's what I think. McCain seems like a chauvenist and when she introduced him this morning, she looked like she's getting a little tired of it...like it finally dawned on her why she'd been selected.
2. McCain's idea of an MFI to proactively help banks take over failing loans sounds, on the face of it, kinda ridiculous. Why would you create a government agency to protect banks from failing loans? And, given that he wants to lower taxes, how does he expect to pay for it? This just sounds like he's saying the things that will mollify the people. Kind of like the gas tax holiday he
3. I think he's making unnecessary digs at Obama (and the 'do nothing' congress) during this speech. Just talk about the policies you support and take politics out of it for a moment. Put Country First, McCain.
4. He mentions that America has the second highest corporate tax rate in the world - 35%. Doesn't he think that maybe one of the reasons we have a great country is because we're using tax money to make it that way? Most of us live in safe, large homes that are protected by an infrastructure we can trust. When people go overseas they talk about developing an appreciation for the small conveniences we count on in the US; things our tax dollars pay for. Generally safe food and drinking water, national parks, a strong military, roads, bridges, police protection, etc. Even the fact that when a hurricane or earthquake hits the US, a lot of people survive because we have agencies that create safe buildings.
So, McCain - don't pretend that citizens alone are the only thing that make the US such a great country. Without the services and infrastructure we pay for with tax dollars, we're just regular humans. Americans aren't uniquely great in and of themselves. We're lucky.
